"We will never save civilisation as long as civilisation is our main object. We must learn to want something else even more."
—C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
I think they can. It just depends what you're worshiping. The key is not to delude yourself into thinking you're worshiping God when you're worshiping your country.

What we did was we let a vetran say a few words, more than a few as it turned out. Then the choir sang, "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory".
Then the rest of the service was geared toward the preaching theme which had nothing to do with memorial day.
Overheard: "Someone told me this was the original stars-and-stripes that flew over Calvary."
Thankfully not. Do "patriotic" and "worship" go together?
