A Quote Game Entry from a Man Who Is Not Shy

This is a pretty familiar name. I expect some readers will know it quite well. Even more than most of these quotes, the identity and milieu of the person who is saying these things is rather significant.
To me, for a man to stand and preach a topical sermon (I don't mean to be unkind) but it is ultimate gall.
I'll send a TNIV to anyone who gets this one unless I have to offer more than three hints (if necessary). He also said this in the same context:
Regrettably, I have to believe that anytime you stand up and face a congregation these days in the average [Baptist] church, you're looking at thirty to forty percent that have neve been born again.

I take it back. I will go with Mohler.

Devers?

Mark Dever.

Who is Devers?

Frank Sansone said...

Sorry, Dever not Devers. Oops.

Both guesses are wrong. Gail Devers, former American Olympian sprinter and hurdler, would have been wrong too.

Broadus.

Could I have TNIV anyway?

This blog is about grace but not "cheap grace." Let's not get carried away. I'm assuming you want a TNIV because you think it would be valuable for use in your church's youth ministry. If you'll send me all your teens' addresses, I'll get a TNIV to as many of them as possible.

Do you ever wonder if people read this stuff and think we're serious?

I get mistaken for being serious all the time. I think it's the beard.

I mean, more than one person actually thought that Scott turned 19 yesterday.

I essentially want the TNIV for the same reason I wanted my copy of the Book of Mormon.

Time for a hint...

That reminds me. I have an extra copy of the BoM that I would gladly substitute for a TNIV if anyone ever prefers it.

As far as a hint goes, y'all started off warmer and got colder.

Begg.

I don't know if I'm allowed to guess twice, but I really want that TNIV.

No and no.

No, and not that close to the right answer, but that's an awfully good guess.

Yeah, I am going with Tom Nettles. It sounds more like an SBC guy than a fundy guy. Fundies are always talking about themselves.

Anonymous said...

Not Nettles either. Does he talk about preaching much?

I heard this in a spoken word format. That's hint #2. Only one more freebie before the TNIV's off the table.

Jerry Vines

No, but I think that's a pretty good guess too. I've never heard Vines, but I can imagine he might say that from secondhand info.

Fine, Paige Patterson.

Finally. I can't believe you almost blew that one.

Send me your mailing address and I'll get the TNIV right in the mail.

Page Patterson = Wrong

Paige Patterson = Right

So, this was really just a spelling bee?
