World Cup Converts an Old School Football Guy

Jack Kemp says, "I’m hereby publicly acknowledging that soccer can be interesting to watch."

It should be noted that Jack Kemp also thinks that George Clooney's movie "Good night and good luck" was a nailbiter.

"Conversion" is a strong word. Easy believism maybe, but not a true conversion. Long live the true football - the NFL kind, that is.

T&J,

So you're saying that, like so many football players, Kemp took one too many knocks to the head?

JJ,

I chose my words carefully. Perhaps it doesn't count since there wansn't an invitation.

Is it possible to like American football and soccer?

What a perfect place for me to paste a link to a newspaper article I read this morning:

I particularily identify with #12, 5 and 3.

I agree that the flopping is ridiculous. The US team definitely flops less than the other countries and never rolls around holding their knee after a supposed elbow to the chest. However, soccer isn't the only sport where players flop. I don't understand why there has to be scoring in order for something to be interesting. NBA players score at a ridiculous pace. They score so often it is boring. Americans don't complain about scoreless hockey matches or scoreless baseball games. It is about understaning the game. Some don't understand the game and thus, find it boring. Ronaldinho displays more athleticism and creativity every time he touches the ball than you will find in a whole season of baseball.

10-12 all work for me. South America is by far the worst of the floppers, and you can throw Mexico in with that. The southern European countries aren't far behind. Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal had a ridiculous play where he took a slight bump, ran three steps, and just collapsed as if shot. The worst part was that the ref gave him the call when he should have been carded for flopping like a beached minnow.

Northern and eastern Europe are in the discussion. Africa is probably next (but not nearly as bad), then the Asian teams, and finally Australia and USA.
