"The Church of Jesus Christ Is Not American"

Here's a thought-provoking post from Bob Bixby on why his church isn't having a patriotic service this Sunday.

In other words, when we gather to worship, what should we be worshiping? When we sing, about what should we be singing? For whose name should we declare our love? To whom should we be singing? Our country?

Ben, Bixby hit that one out of the park. I too am proud to be an American, but my highest loyalties are found with the King of Kings and my citizenship is in heaven. I have the opportunity to preach this Sunday morning and I also chose to not preach an American/patriotic message. I chose to preach from Philippians 1:27-30...may we all live as citizens who are worthy of the gospel!

Good for you, Dave. A timely choice. I had the opportunity to preach twice last Sunday out of Philippians 1 on the centrality of the gospel. I think that's the real theme of Philippians, not unity or joy as conventional wisdom says.
